Tharsis
(2024)
for contrabass clarinet and electronic media

Written for and dedicated to Julian Paprocki
"Tharsis" has been composed for and is dedicated to Julian Paprocki, a Polish contrabass clarinet virtuoso. The written score has an open form, encouraging creative approach to the material and involves elements of improvisation. The performer is encouraged to treat it as a map for creative interpretation. The electronic layer (fixed-media, surround sound) should also be treated as an equivalent of a traditional musical score.
The title:
"Tharsis" has been titled after an enormous Martian plateau, an epitome of a vast space shaped by raging elements.
